How to grow in a greenhouse?
If you want to provide yourself and your entire family with fresh vegetables in the winter season and still look for an opportunity to earn extra money, then it’s time for you to start growing plants in greenhouses.
In this article, just talk about how to grow in a greenhouse.
Plants in the greenhouse can be grown in two ways - to plant them on the beds (approximately as you plant them in the garden) or to arrange the plants on the racks.
How to grow plants in the garden
This method is most suitable for growing cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers and other vegetable crops in the greenhouse.
Depending on the width of the greenhouse, determine how many beds you will make in it - two or three. When planning the number of beds, it is necessary to take into account the fact that along the side walls of the greenhouse beds should be located no more than one meter wide. With wider beds, you can’t reach the plants growing near the greenhouse walls, so it’s hard to care for them. The paths between the beds need to be half a meter wide (minimum), then you can easily move along them.It is better to calculate the width of the tracks in such a way that a garden wheelbarrow freely passes over them - this will greatly facilitate your work in the greenhouse. If your greenhouse is wide enough, then in the middle of it you need to make another bed. The width of this bed can be more than one meter, since you can approach it from two sides.
In greenhouses, it is better to grow plants not on flat ground, but on high beds, since on such beds you can create a thick layer of fertile soil, but it is much easier to care for plants growing on them. In order to make such beds, which, in fact, are very large drawers without a bottom, you will need durable boards ranging in width from 20 to 60 cm (the width of boards is equal to the desired height of the beds). These boards act as curbs - limiters of the beds, they are placed on the edge and fixed from the side of the tracks with stakes driven into the ground.
Pile fertile soil inside these makeshift boxes. The composition of the soil must be selected individually for each individual plant species. Therefore, plan in advance what and where you will plant, and in accordance with this plan, put the necessary type of soil on the beds.
How to grow plants on racks
On the shelves it is very convenient to grow seedlings and all kinds of flowers - in a word, various small plants planted in pots.
The height of the shelving plan on the basis of their growth. The distance between the shelves in one rack depends on the height of the plants - they should feel free on the shelves and not touch the tops of the upper shelves (between the tops of the plants and the top shelf there should be a gap of at least 20 - 25 cm). The optimum width of the shelves is 80 - 90 cm. It is necessary to place the racks in the greenhouse on the same principle as the beds - there should be no more than 80 centimeters width between the racks.
Plants for normal growth in the greenhouse need to provide the necessary temperature. In order for the vegetables and flowers to develop well in the winter, bloom and bear fruit, some kind of heating must be arranged in the greenhouse.
How to heat a home greenhouse
One of the easiest ways to heat a greenhouse in the winter cold is to install a solid fuel boiler inside it and bring the chimney to the street. Firewood, coal, peat or wood shavings and sawdust can be used as fuel in such a boiler.
The use of biofuels
In this case, bird dung, horse or cow dung are used to heat the greenhouse, which produce heat and carbon dioxide during the decomposition process.
For heating greenhouses use a variety of heaters, convectors and other household heaters. In addition to these heaters in the greenhouse, you can use infrared emitters and boilers, which also work on the mains.
In addition to heating, plants growing in the greenhouse need additional lighting - on dull, short winter days, it is simply impossible to do without artificial lighting.
How to light plants
You can, of course, hang some ordinary incandescent bulbs in the greenhouse - they light up the plants and even slightly heat the air, only these lamps consume quite a lot of electricity and the light radiates in that region of the spectrum that is unfavorable for most plants. Therefore, the best option for lighting a greenhouse is to install fluorescent lamps in it (they are also called fluorescent). These lamps shine in the spectrum as close as possible to the natural solar spectrum, in addition, fluorescent lamps are completely cold, so you can place them in rows,in close proximity to plants.
How to air a greenhouse
Another condition necessary for creating a climate inside the greenhouse that is especially comfortable for plants is regular airing.
Make sure that there are several large and easy-opening windows in the greenhouse, hang an exact thermometer on the wall, constantly check its readings and, if necessary, ventilate the greenhouse. Specify the most favorable temperature for growing your plants and carefully maintain it in the greenhouse - remember that overheating is not less harmful for plants than overcooling.
